Dear Mr Ambassador,
CONTINUED ETHNIC CLEANSING IN ZIMBABWE
I note with deep concern the continued unlawful eviction of productive commercial farmers from their farms in Zimbabwe by lawless mobs.
I note the refusal of the Zimbabwe Police to make even the slightest effort to maintain law and order while old people are assaulted and driven off their land as happened in the case of the Du Toit family of Nyazura last week.
I am also informed of the following:
a) Five more farmers of the Nyazura district were “warned” on Monday 12th January that they would also be attacked.
b) The next day, two farmers were attacked by a lawless mob. They are Koos Smit and Tizzy Landos. Three more farmers have been named for the same treatment in the days following.
c) During Tuesday and Tuesday night, the Zimbabwe police at Nyazura and Rusape consistently failed to act to enforce the law, to the extent of not answering any telephones or even their personal mobile phones during the night.
d) A full record of the events in all these cases was transmitted on the internet.
I am also informed that the record of the events in the Nyazura district over the past days reveals a systematic, deliberate campaign to drive farmers off the land. The evidence show that, in this campaign the following individuals contributed to the outrage:
a) Mr Didymus Mutasa, Cabinet Minister for presidential affairs. He was photographed actually present at and organizing some of the evictions.
b) Mr Themba Muliswa - Chairman of the land audit committe.
c) Assistant Commissioner Shepard Gwasira, who is recorded as having prevented the Zimbabwe Police enforcing the law in the Nyazura incidents.
d) Air Commodore Innocent Chiganzi, who occupied the Du Toit farm.
I am informed that more farmers are targeted for this disgraceful treatment.
I now wish to draw your attention to the following:
I am a South African tax payer. Please note that even the poorest South African is a tax payer who pays 14% tax on every purchase that he or she makes.
I am also a South African citizen who notes with deep concern that there are more than three million South Africans out of work, which threatens the social stability of our country.
At the same time we are hosting three million refugees who have fled the lawlessness in Zimbabwe, for which the government of Zimbabwe is solely responsible. These hapless refugees are literally taking the food out of the mouths of the poorest of the poor people in my country.
Because the government of Zimbabwe continues to allow its senior officials to conduct a campaign of lawlessness against its own citizens.
PROSECUTION OF ZIMBABWEAN OFFICIALS
Mr Ambassador, please note that , unless these lawless attacks against against farmers and others stop immediately, today, I shall give my full support to emerging initiatives to:
a) institute judicial proceedings to attach assets of the government and the state of Zimbabwe to compensate at least some of the victims ; AND
b) institute prosecution of certain members of the Zimbabwean government for gross human rights abuse and/or crimes against humanity before South African courts as well as before the International Criminal Court.
Yours sincerely,
